About Us
United Protective Technologies (UPT) was founded around the concept of developing advanced surface modification techniques and products designed to extend the life and enhance the performance of a wide range of devices and components exposed to extreme environments. In partnership with Military entities including NAVAIR, SOCOM, and the US Army Aviation RDEC, as well as organizations like Boeing, Sikorsky, and Lockheed Martin, UPT has developed and patented a highly engineered film laminate for helicopter windscreen erosion protection and transparent armor (ASSALT™), a rotor blade leading edge protection system, and a thin carbon based film (SP3EC) designed to prevent corrosion, reduce wear, and improve efficiency.
Examples of product application:
- IR Window Protective Coating – increases light transmission vs next best alternative by 3-5% and increases component life by 250%. Slated to replace existing coating on Apache PNVS by 2009 year end.
- Helicopter Windscreen Protection – extends windscreen life by 100%+ (for air craft frequently landing on un-improved surfaces) with no affect on Night Vision Goggle performance. Estimated to have saved the Army $2M per year since 2004. Has received Airworthiness on a US Army 60’s, 64’s and 47’s. Navy approval for the H-60, CH-46, V-22, UH-1 and CH-53 is pending.
- Transparent Armor – ASSALT™ protects the outer surface of transparent armor to prevent scratching, chips and pits that cause degradation to light transmission in both the visual and IR range. ASSALT™ also increases the protective qualities of transparent armor by containing airborne debris caused by projectile or blast impact. ASSALT™ extends the life of transparent armor without the time and cost of a complete redesign or reengineering of the part.
- Advanced Wear and Friction Coatings – SP3EC improves power transmission and efficiencies in gearboxes (proven 6% efficiency gains over uncoated surfaces with greater durability than other thin-film coatings).
- Corrosion Control – SP3EC coatings provide an environmental barrier on magnesium, aluminum and steel components along with preventing galvanic corrosion between different metals. In addition to other corrosion applications, development efforts are underway to offset galvanic corrosion problems on the UH-60 gearbox. Examples of other products that benefit from our thin coatings are bearings, internal engine components, struts, actuators and many more.
