Currently aviation engineers are forced to limit the use of composite materials and aluminum in certain areas of an aircraft due to a common phenomenon known as “Galvanic Corrosion”. Materials on opposing sides of the galvanic series when touching have a voltage potential that leads to the transfer of charge between the two materials causing one of the materials to corrode and breakdown. Corrosion of parts in industrial applications has caused countless hours of downtime and an abundance of company resources. UPT is developing new methods for solving these issues with the help of a state-of-the-art thin-film coating protection technology.

Diamond coatings over the past few decades have gained a respectable amount of attention, due to their exotic mechanical, electrical, and optical properties. Typical benefits include: Maximum surface hardness, extremely low coefficient of friction (CoF), exceptional wear properties, excellent dielectric material, high thermal conductivity, optical transparency in IR wavelengths and many more. UPT is currently working on developing their exclusive SP³EC coating to enhance surface substrates far beyond industry common DLC coatings. Typical application enhancements include:

In an effort to combat windscreen erosion on military aircraft during brown outs, UPT has developed an innovative protective window film, applied directly to the environmentally exposed surface of a windscreen or helicopter windshield. Sacrificial transparent laminates offer a barrier that protects the windscreen, while having no adverse affect on pilot vision or NVG performance. This film can be applied in both single and multi-layer configurations. UPT’s protective laminates protect against:

• Sand particles
• Small rocks
• Rain erosion
• Increase pilot safety from large object impacts
• Extend the life of the windscreen
